Chile 50 Years Exhibition: Narratives of Exile
October 2, 2023 @ 09:00 – October 15, 2023 @ 17:00
This event celebrates the artwork of the UK’s exile community in commemoration of the 1973 military coup that deposed democratically elected Socialist President Salvador Allende and led to the forced exile of over half a million Chileans, of which 3,000 arrived in the UK.
The exhibition will feature the sculptures of late Anglo Chilean artist, Santiago Bell, founder of the Bromley by Bow arts Center, Governor of the 8th Region & former political prisoner. Also featured are the works of London-based arpillera collective, Bordando por la Memoria, who have been collectively embroidering the names of the disappeared. The group is composed of first- and second-generation exiles, using the traditional resistance art technique of arpilleras (embroidering real-life images onto burlap to create a narrative).
The artwork, much of it previously unseen, will be available to King’s College students and wider community for ten days.
